Whois Lookup

Query Whois information for domains and IP addresses – registrar, owner and nameservers.

How the Whois Lookup Works

A Whois lookup sends a request to the responsible Whois server of the domain registry or Regional Internet Registry (RIR). Our tool queries multiple sources and presents the information in a structured format: registrar, registration data, nameservers and – where available and not hidden by privacy services – owner information.

Frequently Asked Questions about Whois Lookup

What does a Whois lookup show?

A Whois lookup returns registration information for a domain or IP address: the registrar, registration date, expiry date, nameservers and – depending on the domain – the owner and contact details. Since GDPR, personal data is anonymised by many registrars.

Why is some Whois data hidden?

Since GDPR came into effect (May 2018), European registrars must protect personal data in Whois entries. Many use a "Privacy Service" or only display the organisation. For .com/.net domains, personal data is often completely anonymised.

Can I see who owns a website?

For many domains the owner is visible via Whois, especially for company domains. Private individuals often use domain privacy services. Alternatively, check the website's legal notice – in Germany this is required by law.
