How IP Geolocation Works
Our tool determines your approximate location based on your public IP address using the MaxMind GeoLite2 database. Localisation works at country level with over 99% accuracy. At city level the hit rate is 50–80% depending on the region. The results reflect the location of your ISP's network node, not your actual home address.
How is the location of an IP address determined?
IP geolocation is not based on GPS or a database of your physical address, but on the mapping of IP ranges to geographic regions. Organisations like MaxMind and IP2Location maintain these mappings by combining several data sources: Whois entries of ASN owners, BGP routing information, traceroute data and crowd-sourced locations from mobile apps. The result is an estimate, not a measurement.
What affects the accuracy
- Residential users with dynamic IPs: usually accurate to the city of the provider hub (e.g. "Munich" for all of southern Germany with some ISPs).
- Business users with static IPs: often more precise, because the company address is in Whois.
- Mobile: depends on architecture — with CGN/NAT the location often shows the central gateway, not the current cell tower.
- VPN addresses: show the VPN server location, not the user.
- Datacenter IPs (AWS, Hetzner, OVH): show the datacentre. Very valuable for detecting geo-spoofing.
Practical use cases
Webmasters check how geo services classify their visitors before serving region-specific content. Admins identify the region of an unusual IP in server logs. Travellers check what location streaming services "see" from their hotel Wi-Fi. Privacy-conscious users verify how much a tracker can derive from their IP alone.
Privacy and IP location
An IP address alone does not reveal your home address. The shown location is typically a city or region with 5–50 km accuracy.
