Why Would You Change Your IP Address?
Your IP address is your digital identity on the internet. Websites, services, and your internet provider can use it to identify and locate you. There are many legitimate reasons to change your IP:
- Privacy – prevent websites from knowing your location
- Bypass geo-restrictions – access regionally blocked content
- Unblock an IP ban – if your IP was blocked by a service
- Public Wi-Fi security – protection on unsecured networks
- Blacklisting – if your IP appears on spam blocklists
Public vs. Private IP Address
Before changing your IP, it's important to understand which type you mean:
| Type | What is it? | Who can see it? |
|---|---|---|
| Public IP | Assigned by your ISP, visible on the internet | Every website you visit |
| Private IP | Address within your home network (192.168.x.x) | Only devices on your local network |
For privacy and geo-unblocking, you need to change your public IP address.
Method 1: Restart Your Router (Easiest)
Most ISPs assign dynamic IP addresses. After restarting your router, you'll often receive a new IP:
- Turn off your router (unplug or use the power button)
- Wait 30–60 seconds
- Turn the router back on
- Wait for the connection to establish
- Check your IP at meine-ip.info
Note: This doesn't work with static IP addresses and may take longer depending on your ISP. Some providers only assign a new IP after 24 hours or at the next reconnection.
Method 2: Use a VPN (Most Reliable)
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) routes your traffic through a server in another country. Websites then see the VPN server's IP, not your real one.
Advantages:
- Takes effect immediately
- Choose your location (Germany, USA, Switzerland, ...)
- Encrypts all your internet traffic
- Works on all devices
Recommended VPN services: NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Mullvad, ProtonVPN
Method 3: Change Private IP on Windows
To change your private IP address (within your home network) on Windows:
- Press Win + R → type
ncpa.cpl→ Enter - Right-click your network connection → Properties
- Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) → Properties
- Select Use the following IP address
- Enter your IP address (e.g.
192.168.1.50) - Subnet mask:
255.255.255.0 - Default gateway: your router's IP (usually
192.168.1.1) - Click OK
To return to automatic assignment: Select "Obtain an IP address automatically".
Method 4: Change Private IP on macOS
- Open System Settings → Network
- Select your active connection (Wi-Fi or Ethernet)
- Click Details (or Advanced)
- Select the TCP/IP tab
- Under "Configure IPv4" → select Manually
- Enter your desired IP address
- Click OK → Apply
Method 5: Change IP on Android
- Settings → Wi-Fi
- Long-press your network → Modify network
- Expand Advanced options
- Change IP settings from "DHCP" to Static
- Enter your IP address and gateway
- Save
Method 6: Change IP on iPhone/iPad
- Settings → Wi-Fi
- Tap the ⓘ icon next to your network
- Select the IPv4 Address tab
- Tap Configure IP → Manual
- Enter your IP address and subnet mask
- Go back – settings are saved automatically
Method 7: Use a Proxy
A proxy server forwards your requests through an intermediate server. Compared to a VPN:
- Usually only works for browsers/specific apps (no system-wide protection)
- No encrypted tunnel
- Often available for free
- Less impact on speed
For genuine privacy protection, a VPN is preferable to a proxy.
Does a New IP Make You Anonymous?
No – a new IP address alone does not make you anonymous. Websites can still identify you through other methods:
- Browser fingerprint – unique signature from browser, OS, fonts, screen size
- Cookies – stored identifiers
- Login data – if you're signed into Google, Facebook, etc.
- DNS leaks – if your VPN is not configured correctly
Check with our DNS Leak Test whether your DNS queries are still leaking to your ISP despite using a VPN.
Verify Your New IP Address
After changing your IP, you can immediately check whether the change took effect on our homepage. Use the IP Geolocation Tool to see where your new IP address is located.
