Identification by fingerprinting
Classic tracking uses cookies — those can be deleted. Browser fingerprinting combines dozens of innocent-looking properties (fonts, screen size, GPU model) into a near-unique profile. EFF research shows that over 80% of browsers are uniquely identifiable even without cookies.
What actually protects you
- Tor Browser standardises all detectable values (font size, canvas, plugins), so all Tor users look identical.
- Brave actively blocks fingerprinting-relevant APIs (canvas randomisation, WebGL noise).
- Firefox with resistFingerprinting (about:config) reduces the profile.
- VPN only changes the IP, not the fingerprint.
What happens to the data?
All browser data on this page is computed locally on your device — not a single value is sent to our server. Only the standard values inside HTTP headers (User-Agent, Accept-Language) reach our web server — but every website you visit sees those too.
Frequently asked questions about browser fingerprinting
Does meine-ip.info store my fingerprint?
No. The canvas hash, WebGL data and font detection are computed in your browser via JavaScript and only displayed there. Nothing is sent to the server. Only HTTP headers (User-Agent, Accept-Language) — which every website receives anyway — reach our server, and we do not log them.
What is a canvas fingerprint?
A small image is drawn invisibly in the background (e.g. "Hello, World!" in a specific font). Because GPU, drivers, font rendering and anti-aliasing differ slightly between devices, each device produces a slightly different pixel hash — effectively a unique identifier.
How can I protect myself from fingerprinting?
Most effective: Tor Browser or Brave, which actively reduce fingerprintable APIs. In Firefox, enable "resistFingerprinting" in about:config. uBlock Origin blocks most tracker scripts. A VPN alone does not help against fingerprinting — it only changes the IP.
Why do I see a different IP than on the homepage?
You should see the same IP. If not, a VPN may have been turned on after page load, or a browser proxy is active. The WebRTC section also shows local IPs (192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x) — those are normal internal network addresses, not your public IP.
