How the IPv6 Test Works

The test evaluates which protocol you used to load this page and shows the address it came from. If the request arrives over IPv6, that proves IPv6 works end to end from your device to our server. If it arrives over IPv4, that is an indication but not proof of missing IPv6 — under Happy Eyeballs (RFC 8305) browsers occasionally prefer IPv4. The test runs without a plugin and without any third-party requests.

What does "IPv6 support" actually mean?

There are three realistic scenarios for a modern internet connection: IPv4 only (classic connection, increasingly rare — older cable contracts, some mobile connections), Dual-Stack (parallel IPv4 + IPv6 — standard with most DSL and fibre connections today), and DS-Lite / IPv6-only with IPv4 tunnel (common on cable and mobile — native IPv6 plus a central IPv4 gateway).

Our scoring system

  • Excellent (Dual-Stack) — IPv4 and IPv6 both work, DNS resolution for AAAA records succeeds. You're future-proof.
  • Good (IPv6 primary) — IPv6 works, IPv4 is available via CGN/DS-Lite. Some games or VoIP services may occasionally have issues with carrier-grade NAT.
  • Partial — IPv6 is reachable but not complete — e.g. only link-local addresses, no global routing.
  • None — IPv4 only. You don't miss any of the internet, but 35 % of the global top sites are IPv6-capable today (Google, Facebook, Netflix, …) and your routing takes the older path.

Why IPv6 is becoming increasingly important

IPv4 only has 4.3 billion addresses — globally exhausted long ago. ISPs solve this with carrier-grade NAT (CGN), where hundreds of customers share a single public IPv4 address. Consequence: inbound connections (for self-hosted services, online games with direct connection, some VoIP setups) no longer work reliably. IPv6 fixes this fundamentally: every device gets its own public address again.

What to do if IPv6 doesn't work

Three places to check: (1) ISP contract — some plans are IPv4 only. A call to support, often a plan adjustment is enough. (2) Router setting — on FritzBox, Speedport & co. there's an "Enable IPv6" switch. Default is usually "auto", but some older devices need explicit setting. (3) Device setting — Windows has IPv6 on by default, but some VPN apps disable it. More in the article IPv6 Explained.

Do I need to do anything to use IPv6?

In most cases, no. If your ISP supports IPv6, it is activated automatically. Your router and operating system must also support IPv6 – this is standard for current devices. Use our test to verify everything is working correctly.
